ABSTRACT
The XI World Forestry Congress will take place in Antalya, Turkey
from the 13 to the 22 October 1997 at the invitation of the Government
of Turkey. Its theme: Forestry for Sustainable Development,
towards the 21st Century reflects the current activities and
preoccupation of the forestry sector at the dawn of the new millennium.
It follows the Rio Summit in 1992 and builds on the recommendations
of the last session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Forestry,
the FAO Committee on Forestry, the fifth session of the Commission
on Sustainable Development and the special session of the UN General
Assembly for the overall review and appraisal of the agreements
of the Rio Summit. The Congress is organized by the Government
of Turkey, with technical assistance from FAO. It is open to
all persons interested in forestry and more than 3 000 participants
are expected to come to Antalya.
The programme will include technical sessions for which more than
1 200 voluntary papers have been received, pre-congress satellite
and side meetings, special sessions on youth and women in forestry,
and social activities including tours to areas of major technical
or tourist interest.
