Uganda hosts the 25th African Commission on Agricultural Statistics (AFCAS)

The 25th Session of the African Commission on Agricultural Statistics (AFCAS) will be held in Entebbe, Uganda from 13 to 17 November 2017.

13 November 2017, Entebbe, Uganda – The African Commission on Agricultural statistics 25th session is taking place in Uganda, starting on 13-17 November 2017, bringing together all FAO member countries of the African continent responsible for the development of agricultural statistics in their respective countries.

The week long meeting will review and exchange ideas on the state of food and agricultural statistics in the continent and advise member countries on the development of their agricultural statistical systems within FAO's programme of Work and Budget for Africa.

The 25th Session of AFCAS will discuss the progress made by FAO and it’s member countries in Africa to improve agricultural statistics since the last AFCAS session. The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics has been adopted in 2010 and a Global Action Plan and an Africa Action Plan have been developed and implemented since 2011 under the leadership of African Regional Institutions (AfDB, UN-ECA, AU) with the technical support of FAO.

The theme of the 25th Session of AFCAS is ‘‘Agricultural Statistics in the SDG era: Challenges and opportunities’’.  In accordance with this theme, the 25th session of AFCAS will focus on SDG indicators to help senior officials of National Statistics Offices (NSOs) and Ministries of Agriculture (MoA) to understand their role in improving the data collection, quality, comparability and use of their country’s indicators.

The agenda for this session gives an opportunity to discuss and share experiences, and will enable the drafting of relevant recommendations for better statistical monitoring of SDG indicators and the improvement of agricultural statistics in Africa.
