July 2016, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organize, in Dakar, the First Africa ECTAD Regional Meeting (AfREM). 70 participants are expected at this meeting that will bring together the newly formed ECTAD team of over 50 people in Africa and the staff from Regional office for Africa (RAF), North Africa and the Near East (RNE), Asia (RAP) and the seat.
The objective of this meeting is to introduce FAO as a UN organization and its role and responsibilities vis-à-vis of the country members and to provide a better understanding of the structure of ECTAD Units and their links with the FAO offices at Country, Sub-region and Regional levels, and their working relationships. For participants, it will also be to develop an ECTAD team spirit in the region (RAF and RNE) and with colleagues in other regions (HQs, RAP) with an understanding of the role and responsibilities of various project staff and their relationship with the regular programme staff at all levels.
 About ECTAD in Africa
The Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) was established in 2004 as a unique partnership between the technical (AGA) and operational (TCE) Divisions of FAO. The ECTAD Programme in Africa has been launched in 2006 following the introduction of HPAI in Nigeria in West Africa, and Egypt in North Africa.

With the recent funding agreement between FAO and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), signed in November 2015, to support a number of projects under their Emerging Pandemic Threats Phase 2 (EPT-2) Programme, the ECTAD operation in Africa has significantly expanded. FAO has made extraordinary efforts to establish new ECTAD Country Units in several sub-regions that include East Africa (EA), Near East and North Africa (NENA), and West and Central Africa (WCA). In Africa, in the last 8 months, ECTAD country units have been established in: Burkina Faso, Cameron, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda.
