A GENERATIONAL CHALLENGE

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), recognising the role of the millions of small-scale fishers, fish farmers fish processors and traders in providing nutrition to billions of people and contributing to the challenge of achieving Zero Hunger.  More than 60 per cent of people in Africa are under 25 years of age and many in the small-scale industries in Africa are young people. The future of artisanal fisheries and aquaculture lies in their hands.

As the lead agency for celebrating IYAFA 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will host a Twitter Space celebrating the contribution of Africa’s youth while also hearing their key concerns such as the continued rise of illegal fishing, harmful environmental and unsustainable ways of working, the bureaucratic barriers they face, and the possibilities that technological advances can offer in increasing the yield, reducing waste and opening up processing and trading opportunities to both women and men in the industries on a more equal basis.

Join us for an exciting and engaging discussion in Twitter Spaces with a group of young leaders representing the face of small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish processors in Africa.

Time: 12:30pm
