AUC/FAO High-level Consultation on Post-Harvest Losses (Johannesburg, 22-23 October 2014)
Contributing to the Implementation of the AU Malabo Declaration (June 2014, Johannesburg, South Africa)
THEME - Transforming Africa’s Agriculture for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods: Harnessing Opportunities for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development.
The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are mobilising public and private actors from across the continent to identify concrete actions that will add value to on-going efforts to reduce post-harvest losses.
At the 23rd Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea from 26-27 June 2014, Heads of State and Government adopted a Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Livelihoods.
The Malabo Declaration – a milestone in the 2014 AU ‘Year of Agriculture and Food Security’ marking the 10th anniversary of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) - adopted seven key commitments including the commitment to Ending Hunger in Africa by 2025. To achieve this, they further resolved to halve the current levels of post-harvest losses from their current level by the year 2025.
