From December 8 to 23, 2024, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will host a pivotal training session as part of the PROFISHBLUE project. This initiative aims to strengthen fisheries governance and support sustainable development of the blue economy in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The focus of the training is the implementation of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Information Management System (FAIMS), a state-of-the-art tool for fisheries data collection and analysis.

The training will empower national officers and enumerators in Stratas of Kalemie, Moba and Uvira, key areas along Lake Tanganyika, with the skills to use the FAIMS system. Participants will learn to collect and analyze fish stock assessment data, contributing to more sustainable fisheries management. This effort addresses challenges such as inadequate connectivity, outdated infrastructure, and limited technical knowledge by providing customized digital tools and targeted capacity-building sessions.

With technical support from the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI), the training includes customizing FAIMS forms for the DRC, procuring necessary equipment, and conducting practical and theoretical sessions. This initiative is expected to enhance local capacities, promote data-driven decision-making, and enable the collection of critical fisheries data for sustainable resource management in Lake Tanganyika.

The PROFISHBLUE component implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is a step toward integrating innovative technology into fisheries governance, paving the way for improved food security, nutrition, and economic development in the region.
