A legendary figure in Ivorian football and two-time Africa Cup of Nations champion (2015 and 2024), Max Alain Gradel is now stepping onto a new playing field: sustainable development. The Ivorian international is collaborting with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to promote the agri-food sector in general, and in particular, fish farming and the blue economy in Côte d’Ivoire.
"Throughout my career, I have benefited from the unwavering support of Ivorians and Africans. Today, it’s my turn to give back to my country and continent by getting involved in a vital sector: the agri-food sector in general, and especially fish farming," said Max Alain Gradel.
The football star plans to use his image and influence to raise awareness among young people, women, and decision-makers about the importance of investing in the agri-food sector, and particularly in local fish production, which is a promising source of jobs and income.
"Youth and women of Côte d’Ivoire, take an interest in the agri-food sector. Explore the opportunities offered by fish farming. It’s a sector of the future. And to you, financial partners, invest in the blue economy. It’s a powerful driver of growth and wealth creation," he said.
His commitment was welcomed by FAO Representative Mr. Joseph Nyemah: "I congratulate Max Gradel for this courageous and inspiring decision. Agriculture is full of opportunities. It can transform our economies, create jobs, and ensure food security. With determination and collective effort, we can reverse the trend and strengthen our local production."
Fish farming: a strategic lever for the future
Max Gradel’s commitment aligns with a national strategy led by Ivorian authorities to achieve food security by 2030. Fish farming, in particular, is identified as a high-potential sector. Each year, the Government of Côte d’Ivoire spends over 400 billion CFA francs to import fish to meet local demand, a figure that underscores the urgent need to boost domestic production.
In this context, FAO is implementing the FISH4ACP program, funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The program aims to sustainably develop the tilapia value chain in Côte d’Ivoire, creating thousands of opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
Selab Fisheries Expo
Continuing this momentum, the Selab Fisheries Expo, organized by the Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources with FAO’s support, will take place from 24 to 26 April 2025.
This expo will be a strategic showcase for sector innovations, a platform to attract investment, and a call to action for youth to actively engage in the sector.
