Satellite Information for Locust Forecasting: Meteosat
As of early 2005, the latest generation of METEOSAT-8 (MSG-1) imagery covers the entire Earth with an improved spatial resolution (pixel size) of 3 x 3 km at centre (nadir) and a temporal resolution of 15 minutes. Images based on infrared and microwave channels provide information on cloud cover which can be related to rainfall. This method is called Cold Cloud Duration. Rainfall estimates in the form of cumulative rainfall maps are available on the Internet from several different sources such as the US Navy, NOAA and IBIMET.
