This Symposium will address production and environmental issues central to the development of sustainable agriculture in the subtropical zone, worldwide. This zone includes many lesser developed countries, which are increasingly facing pressure from a rapidly growing population. A sustainable increase in agricultural productivity is urgently required but this is often limited by ineffective use of land and fertilizers, and by environmental degradation. Farming systems in the subtropical zone are usually more complicated and often receive less technical support, compared to other zones. Measures, including policy, science and technology, and extension are urgently required to develop and sustain agricultural productivity in the subtropical zone. The Symposium aims to bring together policy and agricultural and environmental specialists, concerned with key issues relating to agriculture and the environment in the subtropical zone worldwide.
Themes and Papers: The Symposium will include keynote, invited, and voluntary papers, and posters, which will be accommodated in four themes:
• Theme 1 - Sustainable crop production and food security
• Theme 2 - Resources and management for sustaining agricultural eco-systems
• Theme 3 - Integrating crops and livestock
• Theme 4 - Interactions among agricultural production, climate change, and the environment
The program has been developed by an International Scientific Advisory Committee, involving representatives from CGIAR Centers, FAO, IFA, IPNI, and other institutions.
Submission of Papers: Voluntary papers are now called for. Initially, an Abstract should be submitted by June 30, 2010 to [email protected] or to the Symposium web site: issasr.isa.ac.cn; papers will be selected for oral or poster presentation. All accepted abstracts will be printed and made available at registration. English will be the language of the Symposium.
A Special Issue of the Journal of the Science of the Science of Food and Agriculture (JSFA) will be published and will include the keynote and invited papers, and selected voluntary papers. A presenter whose paper is being considered for inclusion in this Special Issue will be asked to prepare the paper by August 31, 2010, using JSFA Instructions to Authors. All decisions relating to the inclusion of papers in the Special Issue will be made jointly by the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture and JSFA.
