NSP - Chloropicrin


Chloropicrin may be used for the control of nematodes, bacteria, fungi, insects, and weeds. The product, formulated as a liquefied gas, is also used as a warning agent for odorless fumigants such as MeBr.  It is currently used combined with 1,3-D (see above) to broaden its spectrum. Chloropicrin is an effective means for the control of soil-borne fungi, but it is not effective for weed and nematode control. Applied alone at a rate of 150 L/ha reduced the infection of V.dahliae in strawberries to undetectable levels. This substance has a pungent odor and thus can be unpleasant to handle. After its application, the dispersion into soil and evaporation from the soil takes place slower than Methyl Bromide. This means that the period between its application and planting is much longer than with the application of methyl bromide. However, Chloropicrin is not an ozone depleter instead it can contaminate groundwater.
