Connecting Cuba's Agricultural Knowledge with the World through FAO AGRIS

FAO/Rafa Stedile

Cuba has a strong tradition of agricultural research, food production, and rural innovation. Various institutions, ranging from universities to government agencies, generate data, studies, and reports that contribute to agricultural knowledge on a global scale.

In recent years, FAO AGRIS has provided support to Cuban institutions with the aim of increasing the visibility and accessibility of the country's extensive scientific production in the agricultural field before the international community. This initiative demonstrates a shared commitment to promoting open knowledge and scientific information exchange, essential aspects for grounding informed, evidence-based decisions.

In this way, during the second half of this year, more than twenty information resources belonging to different data providers from the Ministries of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Food Industry, and Agriculture have received the FAO AGRIS Recognition Seal, in acknowledgment of their work to keep their collections continuously and actively updated.

Through FAO AGRIS, Cuban institutions have a global platform to share their scientific results. This initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) collects, indexes, and disseminates scientific and technical information related to food and agriculture.

Thanks to their participation, national institutions increase their visibility and expand the reach of their research, making it easier for their results to be accessed by researchers and professionals from around the world, thus contributing to reducing existing knowledge gaps between countries of the Global South.

This network, which has experienced significant growth over the past two years, demonstrates the country's commitment to agricultural scientific production, inter-institutional collaboration, and international knowledge exchange.

With the objective of strengthening these capacities, FAO AGRIS has developed personalized approaches and technical training activities in Cuba. These actions contribute to optimizing metadata management and information organization within each institution, facilitating the integration of their content into the platform. This strategic approach empowers technical and information management teams, allowing them to maintain sustainable and efficient processes for disseminating their research results.

FAO AGRIS's goal is to build a more inclusive and connected agricultural research ecosystem, where the contributions of all participating countries actively contribute to the generation of global knowledge in food and agriculture.

FAO invites more Cuban institutions to learn about FAO AGRIS and the active data providers in the country, joining this collective effort to increase the global impact of national agricultural research.
