AGRIS

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recently delivered a virtual lecture titled "How to Manage Digital Information? AGRIS and AGROVOC" to members of the Latin American Forum on Sustainable Agriculture. This event brought together representatives from the Federation of Associations of Agronomy Engineers of Central America and the Caribbean (FECADIA) and the Pan-American Association of Agronomy Engineers (APIA), providing a platform for professional development in the region.

The session, moderated by Mr. Juan Ramón Rosales, a member of FECADIA's Board of Directors and President of APIA, emphasized the importance of leveraging AGRIS and AGROVOC to enhance agronomic knowledge and strengthen the work of agricultural professionals in Latin America. He noted, "This presentation will serve as a valuable reference for agronomists in Latin America, empowering their tools for future projects that advance sustainable agriculture in the region."

A Closer Look at AGRIS and AGROVOC

During the session, Ruth Velia Gómez, the regional focal point for AGRIS, highlighted AGRIS's 50 years of collaborative efforts and its commitment to strengthening the presence of Latin America and the Caribbean on the platform. The presentation provided a detailed overview of the open-access resources AGRIS and AGROVOC, focusing on their value as essential tools to enhance the visibility and usability of agricultural research.

Participants explored the AGRIS database and the multilingual AGROVOC thesaurus through practical demonstrations, including basic and advanced searches on topics of interest. These resources were showcased as critical allies for indexing, accessing, and sharing high-quality agricultural information.

A Commitment to Transforming Agri-Food Systems

This initiative aligns with FAO's mission to promote international cooperation, increase the global visibility of agricultural research, and facilitate the exchange of specialized knowledge. Through efforts like this, FAO aims to drive more productive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems, addressing the pressing challenges of agriculture in Latin America and beyond.

The Latin American Forum on Sustainable Agriculture continues to serve as a key platform for empowering professionals in the sector, promoting innovative tools like AGRIS and AGROVOC to benefit regional agriculture.
