  A focus on Leading Data Providers; Costa Rica’s Contribution to AGRIS

The International System for Agricultural Science and Technology (AGRIS), managed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has seen significant growth in over one thousand new data providers joining in the last year. To showcase the diverse and impactful contributions within the AGRIS Network, this edition highlights key institutions from Costa Rica, the Central American country with the most records, with over 93,000. These organizations contribute valuable research and data that enrich the global agricultural knowledge ecosystem and support the development of sustainable agrifood systems.

Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE)

Withing more than 12,000 records in AGRIS, CATIE is a leading tropical agriculture research and education center promoting inclusive green development. Its research focuses on agroforestry, sustainability, biodiversity, crop systems, soil, and regional development projects, covering tropics relevant to Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and beyond. Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencia Sociales (FLACSO)

FLACSO contributes over 450 records focused on social sciences related to agriculture, environment, rural development, agroecology, and public policy. Instituto Nacional de Innovación y Transferencia en Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA)

INTA works to innovate and transfer agricultural technologies, supporting sector development aligned with national policies. It contributes practical solutions and services that boost agricultural productivity and sustainability in Costa Rica. 

Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)

IICA, the specialized agency for agriculture in the Americas, contributes over 52,000 records to AGRIS. Its work spans development projects, rural development, agricultural innovation, technical assistance, and natural resources management across Latin America, including Costa Rica. Scientific Electronic Library Online Costa Rica (SciELO)

SciELO Costa Rica offers more than 2,700 records focused on biological control, animal nutrition, climate change, biomass, and fertilization, supporting open access to high-quality regional research. Discover SciELO’s records here.


Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC)

TEC contributes around 1,500 records, specializing in forestry, biomass, crop yields, seed germination, and wood quality. It is a key higher education institution dedicated to science and technology advancement in Costa Rica. Discover TEC’s records here.

Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR)

UCR is Costa Rica’s largest university, contributing over 19,300 records covering cultivation, animal nutrition, biodiversity, conservation, and more. It plays a central role in regional agricultural research and education. Visit UCR’s records here.

Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA)

UNA is a leading public university advancing science in Costa Rica, and offers more than 2,900 records in AGRIS, focused on biodiversity, volcanology, aquaculture, climate change, sustainable development, and conservation. Discover UNA’s record here.


Universidad Técnica Nacional (UTN)

As AGRIS marks its 50th anniversary, we honor the vital contributions of these institutions, whose dedication and expertise have been instrumental in building a comprehensive and dynamic global agricultural knowledge network with over 1,500 data providers. Their continued partnerships reflect AGRIS's commitment to providing free access to high-quality research on agriculture, innovation, and sustainable development.
