'Sembrando Capacidades' project presents recommendations for strengthening peasant, family and community agriculture in Colombia

'Sembrando Capacidades' - a trilateral South-South cooperation project between Brazil, Colombia and FAO is coming to an end after two years of work focused on strengthening instruments and policies for a peasant, family, and community agriculture in Colombia through knowledge management and the exchange of experiences between the two countries in four areas: extension and innovation; agroecology; differentiated markets; and information systems.

This project was executed jointly by the  Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply of Brazil (MAPA), FAO, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia (MADR), through the Directorate of Productive Capacities and Income Generation, and is part of the actions of the regional project Latin America and the Caribbean without Hunger 2025 of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program.

Through 47 spaces for technical exchange in seminars and virtual workshops, in which more than 7,000 people participated in information and communication strategies, the project contributed to raising awareness, disseminating information, strengthening capacities, and generating inputs and recommendations for the creation and improvement of instruments and public policies for a peasant, family, and community agriculture.

As a closing strategy for the project, Sembrando Capacidades carried out two international missions (in Brazil and Colombia) and an event to launch the web repository, which houses documents; primers; videos; podcasts; events; among others. It also presented the book ''Recommendations for instruments and public policies for family farming'', which includes a synthesis of the products, results, and recommendations of the four areas of work of Sembrando Capacidades.

The project also launched two self-learning courses, both part of the FAO Regional Office's Public Policy Training Nucleus, which are now available: 'Short marketing circuits in family farming: a tool for achieving inclusive markets' and 'Innovation and Sustainability in Family Farming'.

The project defines various recommendations generated over two years of exchange with Brazil in the areas of agricultural extension and innovation; agroecology; differentiated markets such as local public procurement, and short marketing circuits; and information systems. These recommendations can be found here in Spanish and Portuguese.
