Food Systems Call to Action: Real-World Action and Progress in Transforming Food Systems for People, Nature and Climate
This article highlights the significant developments at COP 28 regarding sustainable food systems and climate action. The leaders of 160 countries endorsed the COP 28 UAE Declaration, committing to placing food and agriculture at the core of national climate policies and increasing investment in resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems. In addition, non-State actors, including farmers, cities, businesses, and civil society, rallied behind the Food Systems Call to Action, a collective effort to transform food systems and achieve positive outcomes for people, nature, and climate.
Despite progress, the article emphasizes the urgency of further action to address the growing crises of climate change, hunger, and malnutrition. It outlines ongoing global efforts, from partnerships and farmer-driven initiatives to corporate actions, aiming to implement sustainable, agroecological practices, improve access to healthy diets, and reduce food waste. However, challenges remain in scaling these efforts and mobilizing resources for a just transition, especially for vulnerable populations.
The article also introduces the Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers, which will foster collaboration, share experiences, and support financing for farmers, particularly empowering women in rural areas. It calls for continued momentum, highlighting that a coordinated global effort is necessary for food systems transformation. As the world looks toward COP 30 in Brazil, the article invites all stakeholders to join in these critical efforts for a sustainable future.
