A global meta-analysis has shed light on the factors influencing the adoption of diversified farming practices, offering valuable insights for fostering sustainable agriculture. By reviewing 154 peer-reviewed studies across 42 countries, the research highlights the critical role of access to knowledge, social capital, and farmers’ attitudes in driving adoption. These factors often outweigh financial, physical, and natural capital in significance.

Key enablers identified include access to extension services, robust social networks, and awareness of environmental benefits. While land ownership, household income, and literacy levels also play a role, their impact is comparatively smaller. The study underscores the complexity of adoption, with significant variation across practices and geographic contexts.

To encourage widespread adoption, the findings advocate for agricultural initiatives and policies that are holistic, adaptive, and locally tailored. By focusing on building technical knowledge, fostering social connections, and engaging farmers in co-design processes, these strategies can align with local sociocultural norms and market conditions, paving the way for a sustainable agricultural future.
