Resilience and family farming: overview and insights in scientific research
Family farming is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone in the transition to more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems, capable of withstanding economic shocks and climate change. A recent analysis explored global scientific research on family farming and resilience between 2009 and 2023, shedding light on the growing focus on this critical subject.
The study reviewed 138 scientific articles from researchers spanning 64 countries, with a strong representation from Europe and the Americas. Brazil emerged as a leader in this field, with research often emphasizing governance, institutions, and agroecological approaches. Across the studies, key themes such as climate change, food security, and the impacts of COVID-19 were highlighted.
The findings underline the importance of factors like agricultural diversification, traditional knowledge, and supportive public policies in strengthening resilience. This growing body of research underscores the vital role family farming plays in building adaptable and sustainable food systems, offering valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners alike.
