Farmer Seed Systems (FSS) in Sub-Saharan Africa- A case study on Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) in Zambia

This report examines Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) in Zambia, highlighting their role in promoting food and seed sovereignty, as well as enhancing nutrition. FMSS empower local farmers to oversee seed selection, storage, and management, ensuring the preservation of agricultural biodiversity. For this study, focus group discussions in three rural districts—Chikankata, Rufunsa, and Shibuyunji, were conducted—where FMSS are prevalent.

The report advocates for official recognition and policy support for FMSS to enhance seed availability across diverse crops and varieties. It emphasizes that support mechanisms should align with FMSS practices, allowing farmers the freedom to access, share, and sell seeds as needed.
