Agroecology Days in Senegal

For several decades, civil society organizations (CSOs), farmers (POs) and research institutions are taking initiatives to develop agroecology in Senegal. The municipality of Ndiob has particularly distinguished itself through its exemplary policy. Finally, the Senegalese state has recently placed the transition among the five major initiatives of the Commission's Priority Action Plan second phase of the Emerging Senegal Plan (2019-2024). Besides, Senegal was chosen as one of the pilot countries to implement the Agroecology Scaling Up Initiative of FAO.

In order to support the government in its ambition, the actors of Agroecology (Farmers' Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and Institutions of research) have engaged in the Dynamic of Work for a Transition Senegal (DYAETS) to co-produce a contribution document national policies on agroecological transition. This document was built at the end of a large consultation organized between July and October 2019 in 6 agro-ecological zones Senegal, with more than 500 farmers and representatives of civil society, local communities and state services.

In order to consolidate this national dynamic and share with the government the recommendations of the civil society for an agroecological transition in Senegal, the DYAETS, with the support of Enda Pronat, MISEREOR, Ndiob City Hall and GRET, organizes the 3rd edition of Agroecology Days, on January 30th and 31st, 2020, at Dakar.

Around 200 participants from a wide range of sectors are expected to attend the event. The general objective of the third edition of Agroecology Day is to consolidate the multi-stakeholder national dynamic for agroecology in Senegal. In addition, it aims to sensitize the general public on agroecology through the sharing of experiences and or studies; to share with the highest authorities and the general public the contribution document national policies on agroecological transition; and to develop a roadmap for the operationalization of the recommendations on the agroecological transition.

The expected products are:

  • The report of the days on agroecology;
  • Compilation of the results of studies on the agroecological transition;
  • A roadmap for the operationalization of the recommendations
  • Audio-visual support on the public debate.
