Al Mohammedia Cooperative in Morocco

The Skoura palm grove is located in the province of Ouarzazate, an Arab enclave in a Berber region where the population lives mainly from oasis agriculture.

The project was born of a dozen family farms' desire to organize themselves to enhance the value of their olive oil production. The cooperative has mobilized external partners: technical agricultural services in the area (ORMVAO), a local association (Norsys Foundation), and a foreign NGO (Agrisud International).

49 member families each have their own olive orchard (on average 200 olive trees in each orchard, i.e. 9,800 trees at the cooperative level). At the end of 2016, initial contacts were established between the cooperative and Olvea, a supplier to L'Oréal, to set up a sustainable supply chain. The economic benefits are remarkable: additional gains of 23% for producers and doubling the cooperative's margin.

The cooperative is a regional reference in terms of technical and fair trade practices (fixed price, fair remuneration of producers, etc.). With the development of the cooperative's activities, the younger people became interested in the dynamics and today there is a balance between the young and the elderly.

This sheet is produced within the framework of the Avaclim project, which aims to create the necessary conditions for the deployment of agroecology in drylands. The international solidarity association CARI coordinates the Avaclim project while Agrisud International is in charge of its implementation in Morocco.
