Rural Youth Employment and Agri-Food Systems in Guatemala

This context analysis provides an overview of Guatemala, describing the challenges, policies and youth employment programs active in the country, as well as FAO's priorities on decent rural youth employment. Finally, it also analyzes migration and child labour trends and dynamics in the country. Nearly 88 per cent of the world's 1.2 billion young people live in developing countries. Globally, youth account for approximately 24 per cent of the working poor. Although the global youth population is expected to continue to grow, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for young women and men remain limited, especially for those living in economically stagnant rural areas of developing countries. Therefore, creating more productive and beneficial jobs for rural youth is particularly urgent. FAO's Integrated Country Approach to Boosting Decent Jobs for Youth in the Agri-Food System (ICA) program, currently implemented in Senegal, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Guatemala, aims to address this challenge by creating more and better employment opportunities for youth in rural areas and in the agri-food system. To this end, ICA combines different interventions, such as capacity building, institutional support, knowledge generation and partnership promotion.
