Webinar: Permaculture, agroecological strategies and food security

The Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology, in collaboration with the FAO National office in Nicaragua, presented a conference on “Permaculture, agroecological strategies and food security”. The conference was held on 30 November 2020 as part of a series of events aiming at capacity building of rural extensionists and at raising awareness about the multidimensional benefits of agroecology.

It is widely recognized that a radical transformation of food and agriculture systems is urgently needed to address converging social, economic, health, and ecological crises. For this reason, the government of Nicaragua has been working to promote agroecology as a national strategy for integrated development. The government of Nicaragua has been collaborating with FAO on capacity building, data collection and analysis, and the creation of evidence on the multidimensional impact of agroecology.

The conference presented the recent findings of the implementation of TAPE (Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation) in various countries by linking them with an investigation about agroecological transitions in Cuba, and the overall discussion about food security and was delivered by Dario Lucantoni, agroecology specialist at the Animal production and health division (NSA) in FAO.
