Zirâa Al Hayate Cooperative in Morocco

The initiative is taking place in the Rabat region. The Zirâa Al Hayate "Seed of Life" cooperative in the Rabat region distributes plant products from 10 farms with agroecology practices. The cooperative's farms started their activities with agroecology techniques in 2017.

The 10 participating farms of the cooperative are labeled Participatory Guarantee System in agroecology by the Network of Agroecological Initiatives in Morocco (RIAM).

Each producer owns his farm. The cooperative created in November 2019 distributes its products in the "Fruit and Vegetables" section of a supermarket in Rabat, in a section that it manages entirely called "Corner agroecology". At the farm level, agroecology practices are market gardening on living soil, the production of cereals without chemical inputs, the use of old farmers' seeds, and the production of fruit trees without inputs. The soil is richer and can better support the cultivation and thus provide a better production yield.

With this initiative, the partner farms in the region have improved their income. Within a few months, the Zirâa al Hayate cooperative has become the main buyer of agroecology products in Rabat.

The initiative is pioneering both in terms of agricultural practices, for which an adapted agroecology model is designed and in terms of an innovative distribution method, i.e. direct sales from small producers to large-scale retailers.

This sheet is produced within the framework of the Avaclim project, which aims to create the necessary conditions for the deployment of agroecology in drylands. The international solidarity association CARI coordinates the Avaclim project while Agrisud International is in charge of its implementation in Morocco.
