The integration of standardized agricultural terminology into global datasets has been fundamental for addressing the interconnected challenges of gender inequality, water scarcity, and forest sustainability. As the international community prepares to observe three major environmental and social milestones in March 2026, the alignment of technical data through AGROVOC concepts becomes pertinent for ensuring policy effectiveness and research visibility.
The convergence of International Women's Day (March 8), the International Day of Forests (March 21), and World Water Day (March 22) marks a decisive period for agricultural data systems.
The start of the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 places an urgent focus on the theme "Advancing Access to Justice for Women Farmers." To support this, FAO AGRIS is prioritizing the use of AGROVOC concepts such as Women farmers, Gender equality, and Land tenure. These terms are essential for identifying and dismantling the legal and social barriers that hinder women's productivity and security.
Simultaneously, the 2026 theme for the International Day of Forests, "Forests and Economies," underscores the role of forests as economic infrastructure. With billions of people relying on forests for livelihoods and nutrition, concepts like Bioeconomy and Ecosystem services are being utilized to bridge the gap between forest conservation and economic innovation. Furthermore, the focus on Non-wood forest products highlights the often-undervalued contributions of forests to rural community resilience.
The global water crisis, centered this year on the theme "Where water flows, equality grows," further intersects with these objectives. Current data shows that women and girls bear the brunt of water scarcity, often serving as the primary collectors and managers while being excluded from decision-making. FAO is advocating for the integration of concepts like Water security, Water management, and Sanitation to center women as leaders and scientists in water solutions.
Humanitarian and development partners are encouraged to explore these terms and their multilingual equivalents in the AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus to strengthen the global evidence base for agricultural policy and practice.
