Revitalizing Knowledge Lab Learning: A New Chapter for FAO AGRIS, AGORA and AGROVOC

AGROVOC

FAO’s KnowledgeLab is enhancing its role as a platform for accessible, self-paced learning by offering . Notably, three key courses—AGROVOC, AGORA and AGRIS for Data Providers—are designed to develop practical skills in data management, interoperability, and knowledge organization.

As part of this initiative, KnowledgeLab will transition to Moodle 4.5 LTS on 24 March 2026, introducing a more modern, user-friendly and engaging learning environment. This update will make it easier for participants to access content, follow structured learning paths and complete courses more efficiently.

Learners will benefit from a clearer and more intuitive course layout, improved progress tracking and enhanced multimedia capabilities. These improvements support a more dynamic learning experience, helping users better understand and apply complex topics such as metadata standards, controlled vocabularies and data sharing practices.

The courses available through KnowledgeLab are designed to address different needs across the agricultural research community. The FAO AGRIS for Data Providers course, available in English and Spanish, introduces participants to the FAO AGRIS platform, including how to contribute as data provider and access services that support data exchange and visibility. The AGROVOC course provides a comprehensive introduction to knowledge organization systems and the AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus, including practical training on tools and guidance on vocabulary curation.

Both courses are free of charge, self-paced and accessible globally. Upon completion, learners receive a certificate that supports professional development and demonstrates expertise within the global agricultural knowledge ecosystem.
