The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, opened the call for the second edition of the journalistic contest The Power of Stories, which will be held within the framework of the celebrations of World Food Day (WFD) 2021.

Every day there are hundreds of food heroes in Latin America and the Caribbean, working and striving to transform food systems. We get to know these stories thanks to the journalists of our region, whose role is fundamental to showcase this fight against hunger and malnutrition.

The FAO office for Latin America and the Caribbean wants to reward and recognize journalists who have contributed to instruct and shape public opinion on the right to food, through the second edition of the "The Power of the Stories" journalist award.

The award will recognize the best reports from the written press, radio, television and photography on topics related to World Food Day 2021.

This year, the celebration seeks to draw attention to the need to create sustainable agri-food systems that offer a variety of nutritious foods at an affordable price for all. Currently, 40 % of the world's population cannot afford a healthy diet.

Who can participate?

Journalists and communicators who carry out their professional activity in the Latin American media or who work as correspondents for international media will be eligible for this award.

Participants will be able to present the works that have been published in the written press, radio, television and digital media from January 1, 2021 to October 31, 2021.

FAO will recognize journalistic work that address issues related to the theme of the WFD 2021, such as:

• Healthy nutrition
• The end of hunger
• Access to food
• Local agriculture
• Food loss and waste
• Malnutrition
• Agri-food systems
• Sustainable production

• Written reports (print or digital press)
• Television (report format, press release or interview)
• Radio (report or podcast)
• Photo-report

• Participants must submit their work together with the attached full contest form.

• Publication of your work in the media should be verifiable.

• Each journalist will be able to present up to three journalistic pieces in the same category.

• The accuracy of the information provided will be evaluated by a regional technical officer.

• The length of journalistic pieces in TV format should be a maximum of 15 minutes. In the event that they exceed this time, the contestants must present a teaser of their material.

• Work that does not meet the requirements described above will be disqualified.
