Meeting of the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean (PFH LAC) with Members of Parliament of the Caribbean Community

Caribbean.
21-07-17

CARICOM leaders have recognized the urgency of addressing the issue of food insecurity in the region and their commitment is manifested through several actions taken thus far.  On Friday 21 July 2017, under the aegis of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), dozens of parliamentarians from across the Caribbean will come together with a single goal: to develop and strengthen regulatory frameworks to help eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in the region.

The FAO has worked with countries around the world to establish parliamentary fronts against hunger; the aim being for both government and opposition, through a bipartisan parliamentary motion, to express a commitment to reduce hunger to zero.

During the Bridgetown meeting, discussions will seek to determine key Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) issues based on existing data, the region’s peculiarities and the best national and sub-regional mechanisms to advance laws, policies and advocacy on these issues.

The Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean (PFH LAC) will be introduced to delegates and opportunities for the establishment of PFH LAC national chapters as a mechanism for bringing focus to FNS issues will be explored. Specific actions will also be identified as a roadmap for the parliamentary front against hunger and malnutrition in the Caribbean.

Among the presenters are:

Dr. Lystra Fletcher Paul, FAO Deputy Sub-regional Coordinator

The Hon. Luisa Maria Calderón Hinojosa, the Executive Coordinating Committee (ECC) of the PFH, Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Hon.  Saboto Caesar, ECC of the PFH LAC, Sub-coordinator for the Caribbean

Mr. Jean Leonard Touadi, FAO Special Coordinator for Parliamentary Alliances

Her Excellency. Guadalupe Valdez, Special Ambassador of the Zero Hunger Committee (ZHC) for Latin America and the Caribbean
