Closing event of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022

The celebration of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022) in Latin America and the Caribbean included the participation of various stakeholders, including national fisheries and aquaculture authorities, as well as fisheries and aquaculture, and civil society organizations. In order to promote the inclusion the various actions within the framework of the celebration, three Subregional Committees were created in South America, Mesoamerica and the Caribbean.

The year laid the foundations to strength the livelihoods of small-scale artisanal fishers, fish farmers, and fish workers.

As the celebration draws to a close, FAO is organizing an in-person event in Costa Rica within the framework of the XVIII Session of the Commission on Small-Scale, Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture for Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPESAALC) where the actions carried out to celebrate the Year in the region will be presented and commitments will be announced to make the recommendations of IYAFA 2022 a reality.
