Some Summit Interviews

Well before the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was not on track to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Parliamentarians – with their powers to draft and adopt legislation, approve public budgets and monitor the implementation of public policies and government commitments – are well placed to ensure that food security and nutrition are prioritized on national political and legislative agendas, in line with the specific contexts and needs of their societies.

Parliamentarians from all over the world will come together at the Second Global Parliamentary Summit Against Hunger and Malnutrition to share their experiences of implementing legislation on matters related to food and nutrition security, discuss needs and priorities to address the challenges associated with hunger and malnutrition, and build relationships between parliamentarian peers and parliaments. The Summit will explore the possibility of creating formal voluntary commitments via networks of parliamentarians based on a Global Parliamentary Pact, which would include periodic monitoring and follow-up on legislative outcomes and achievements.

The Summit will

  1. reaffirm theurgency of ending hunger and malnutrition as part of global sustainable development objectives, stressing the crucial role that parliamentarians have to ensure food security and nutrition, including through the adoption of gender responsive approaches (among others).

  1. identify and share examples of good practices, particularly relating to the development of innovative legislation, that have been effective in eradicating hunger and malnutrition or which promise to be.

  1. Identify key priority areas for further parliamentary action on food security and nutrition.

  1. build consensus among parliamentarians on the need for action in these priority areas and stimulate broader political commitment (through a pact) and support for such action, including support for parliamentary efforts to develop strong, coherent and comprehensive legal policy frameworks to promote improved food security and nutrition more broadly.
