Background
Within the framework of its 38 regional conference, FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean will conduct consultations (one online consultation and three sectorial consultations (of a hybrid nature) with non-state actors (NSAs): the Civil Society, Private Sector, and Scientific and Academic sector. These instances are expected to gather relevant information for the regional conference.
The FAO Regional Conference is an official forum where ministers of Agriculture and senior officials from the Member States of the region come together to discuss
challenges and priority issues related to food and agriculture, aiming to promote regional coherence in global policy matters.
The Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean will take place in two phases.
- Senior Officers Meeting (virtual) 11-13 March 2024
- Ministerial Session (Hybrid) 18-21 March 2024
The role of non-state actors (NSAs) in the regional conference is to transparently contribute to the dialogue of countries with information, experiences, data, and knowledge from each of their sectors. These actors are represented by individuals and institutions from civil society, the private sector, and individuals from the academic and scientific community who are part of academic institutions in the region.
Prior to 38 FAO Regional Conference, FAO will organize a consultation with the civil society (on February 28th and 29th, 2024 in Santiago, Chile). This space is intended to foster an exchange of ideas between the participants and is an opportunity for the sector to share its perspectives and potential contributions in FAOs thematic areas. It will also serve to prepare a declaration with the positioning of the sector to be presented and delivered to the member countries during 38 FAO Regional Conference and for the election of civil society spokespersons who will represent the sector at the Conference.
