Report Launch “Improving food security and nutrition through local public food procurement from smallholder farmers”
Virtual Event, 02/12/2025
Local public procurement of food from smallholder farmers is a strategic tool that contributes to food security and nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean. In a region marked by inequalities, rural poverty, and the high cost of healthy diets, this public policy is able to link state demand with local supply, promoting more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems.
FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, together with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), invites you to explore the results of the report that analyzed this public policy tool in the region to discover how it helps family farmers overcome structural barriers such as low productivity, limited market access, and climate vulnerability.
The document presents successful experiences in the region, demonstrating positive impacts on agricultural production, food diversification, local employment, and the inclusion of women.
The event will explore in greater depth the evidence pointing to local public procurement from family farming as drivers of employment, productive diversification and inclusive social development, in addition to the improvements in food security and nutrition.
