FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean

New UN report to show evidence of key role that Indigenous and Tribal Peoples play in preserving forests and reducing carbon emission.

18/03/2021

On 25 of March, at 11:00 am Santiago Chile time, the United Nations will present a new report Forest Governance by Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, focused on the fundamental role that they play in combating deforestation, conserving forests and biodiversity, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Based on a review of more than 300 studies, the new report will reveal for the first time the extent to which science has shown that Indigenous and Tribal Peoples have generally been much better guardians of their forests when compared to those responsible for the region´s other forests.

The findings of the report will be presented at a press conference via Zoom headed by Julio Berdegué, Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations; Myrna Cunningham, president of the Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean (FILAC); and David Kaimowitz, the Manager of the Forest and Farm Facility at FAO and author of the report.
