Caribbean regional writeshop on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) for floods, hurricanes and droughts in the agriculture sector

FAO in collaboration with CDEMA, CDB, CCCCC, CARIWIN Project and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Grenada hosted a "DRM for Floods, Hurricanes and Droughts in the Agriculture Sector". The meeting was held in January in Grenada.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA); the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the CIDA funded CARIWIN Project and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Grenada hosted a "Regional Write Shop on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) for Floods, Hurricanes and Droughts in the Agriculture Sector". The meeting was held from January 17-19, 202, at the Flamboyant Hotel, Grenada.

The Opening Ceremony was chaired by Mr. Randolph Shears, Chief Extension Officer. Welcome remarks were given by Dr. Lystra Fletcher Paul, FAO Representative for Guyana/Regional Land and Water Officer. The Minister of Agriculture of Antigua and Barbuda, Honourable Minister Hilson Baptiste also gave remarks and the Feature Address was presented by Minister Michael Left, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Grenada. The vote of thanks was given by Mr. Benedict Peters, Head of the National Disaster Management Agency of Grenada. A total of fifty-five delegates from eighteen Caribbean countries, including the Overseas territories of Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Social Services, National Emergency Management Agency focal points, Regional and International Organizations such as the Inter American Institute for Cooperation on Agri-culture (IICA), the Caribbean Agricultural Research and De-velopment Institute (CARDI) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and donor agencies such as the InterAmerican Development Bank (EBB) attended.

Participants were apprised of the status of development of DRM plans for the griculture sector in the Caribbean. They received training on the elements of a good DRM plan, shared lessons in the preparation of the DRM plans for the Agriculture sector and identified the shortcomings of their respective plans. As a result of the Writeshop, participants prepared Road maps for completion of their Agriculture DRM plans. A draft outline Agriculture DRM framework was developed and a number of areas were identified for capacity building and further assistance by development partners.
