FAO launches an online Russian-language course on preparedness for an emerging threat to the health of small ruminants: sheep and goat pox

Sheep pox and goat pox are highly contagious transboundary viral diseases of small ruminants that can lead to significant production losses, not only threatening farmers' livelihoods also trade.
In light of the latest outbreaks reported in the Caucasus, the Russian Federation and Central Asia, it has become increasingly important to enhance awareness and preparedness among veterinarians and livestock professionals, who are the first responders.
To address this need, the FAO Virtual Learning Center (VLC) for Europe and Central Asia delivered a comprehensive online training on the prevention and management of sheep pox and goat pox. Through Russian-language instruction, it equips participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to safeguard the resilience of the livestock sector in affected regions.
About the course
The four-week tutored course features six interactive modules that encompass clinical and pathological diagnosis, sampling and laboratory diagnosis, epidemiology, outbreak investigation, control and eradication, as well as surveillance and monitoring. Notably, this course includes a case study that allows them to apply the knowledge gained in a practical scenario.
The course is accredited by the European Organization for Professional Veterinary Education (VetCEE) with 0.5 ECTS credits as a post-graduate level (advanced) training course.
Launched on 10 September 2024, the course attracted 434 participants from 15 countries in Europe and Central Asia, improving the capacity of competent authorities, private veterinarians, laboratory diagnosticians, and academic specialist to prevent and manage these diseases. The online format allowed accessibility for remote professionals and self-paced learning.
The course completion rate was 71.0%, indicating its highly relevance in today's context. Course components included live webinars, interactive multimedia modules, tests, self-assessment questions, and access to trainers via webinars and the discussion forum, which also allowed participants to exchange experiences and views.
