Celebrating 30 years of EMPRES
The Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES) was established by FAO in as special programme 1994 to combat transboundary animal and plant pests and diseases. For 30 years, EMPRES has been key in safeguarding global food security by preventing and controlling outbreaks, protecting farmers' livelihoods and ensuring food supply stability. EMPRES links five components: animal health, plant protection, food safety, fisheries and aquatic health, and forest health. Its comprehensive approach, covering prevention, detection, early warning, rapid response, coordination, and capacity building, is central to FAO's mission to transform agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
