The unlocked potential of inland fish to contribute to improved nutrition in Sri Lanka

Category Post harvest, nutrition

Fish is an important source of animal protein in Sri Lankan diets. Fish is not only a source of protein but also a unique source of healthy fat and essential micro-nutrients, namely long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, vitamin D, and calcium. Consuming fish in the diet increases the amount of iron and zinc that the body absorbs from other foods. Inland fish is a low-cost source of fish for the rural poor who reside in non-coastal areas.
