The regional overviews provide data and analyses on groups of countries with similar geographic and climatic conditions.
\nThe purpose of the regional overview is to present a regional perspective on water resources, agricultural water management and water infrastructures to support continental and regional analyses by providing systematic, up to-date and reliable information that can serve as a tool for for large-scale planning and projection making.
\nRegional overviews are available for six regions: 1) Southern America, Central America and the Caribbean (2016); 2) Eastern Europe (2016); 3) Central Asia (2013); 4) Southern and Eastern Asia (2012); 5) Middle East (2009); 6) Africa (2005).

\nThe six countries forming the Central Asia region were determined by the regional distribution given in FAO's Water Report 23 \"Review of world water resources by country\" (2003). The six countries are Afghanistan and five countries that were part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before their independence in 1991: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
\nIn the previous survey on Irrigation in the countries of the Former Soviet Union (1997), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were grouped into the Central Asia subregion. The present survey includes Afghanistan in the Central Asia region because of the important shared water resources in the Amu Darya and the Tedzhen-Murghab basins. In the previous survey Afghanistan was included in the publication on the Irrigation in the Near East region (1997).
\nThis regional overview presents distinguishing features arising from the new data collected on a national scale for issues addressed in the six country profiles and one transboundary river basin profile, the Aral Sea basin profile. The interest of this new survey lies in the updating of data and in the trends during the last ten years.

\nThe seven countries forming the Eastern Europe region are determined by the regional distribution adopted by AQUASTAT, following the geographical regions given in FAO's Water Report 23 \"Review of world water resources by country\" (2003). The seven countries are Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation and Ukraine that all were part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before their independence in 1991.
\nIn the previous detailed survey on the countries of the Former Soviet Union (1997), Belarus, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine were grouped into the Eastern Europe subregion, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the Baltic States subregion and the Russian Federation was considered alone another subregion. That survey distinguished two more subregions: Caucasus with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and Central Asia with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In AQUASTAT, the Caucasus subregion has now been included in the Middle East region, mainly because of the transboundary water resources shared principally with other countries in the Middle East region, and Central Asia is considered to be a region on its own, including also Afghanistan, as indicated also in the regional division in Water Report 23.
\nThe present survey of Eastern Europe does not consider subregions. The main reason is that the Russian Federation is huge compared with the other countries, with an area covering 94 percent of the area of the region and renewable water resources accounting for 97 of the renewable water resources of the region, making a division in subregions somehow meaningless.
\nThis regional overview presents distinguishing features arising from the new data collected on a national scale for issues addressed in the seven country profiles. The interest of this new survey lies in the updating of data and in the trends during the last ten years.

\nTen years after the first publication on the Near East region, it appeared necessary to update the data and to identify the main changes in water use and irrigation that had occurred there. However, the countries forming the region in this publication are not to the same as the ones in the previous publication. While in the first publication the composition of the Near East region was determined by the countries covered by FAO’s Regional Office for the Near East, it was judged more logical to follow in AQUASTAT the regional distribution given in FAO’s Water Report 23 \"Review of world water resources by country\" (2003). It was also decided to call the region \"Middle East\" rather than \"Near East\", since Near East is considered to be a subregion of the Middle East.
\nThe Middle East region has been grouped into four sub-regions, based on geographical and climatic homogeneity, which has a direct influence on irrigation. These sub-regions and the countries and territories they include are:
\n\n\n\n
\n- Arabian Peninsula: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.
\n- Caucasus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia.
\n- Islamic Republic of Iran.
\n- Near East: Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syrian Arab Republic, Türkiye.
\n
The Arabian Peninsula and the Caucasus are identical to the sub-regions with these names in the previous reports, \"Irrigation in the Near East Region in figures\" (FAO, 1997) and \"Irrigation in the countries of the Former Soviet Union in figures\" (FAO, 1997) respectively, which allows for comparison with the earlier data. The Islamic Republic of Iran is considered separately because it has not a clear geographical, climatic or hydrologic homogeneity with any of the other three sub-regions. The Near East sub-region in this report is similar but not identical to the Middle East sub-region included in the previous report \"Irrigation in the Near East Region in figures\" (FAO, 1997): Cyprus and Malta have been removed from this sub-region, while Israel and the Palestine (including the West Bank and Gaza Strip) have been added.
\nThis regional overview presents distinguishing features arising from the new data collected on a national scale for issues addressed in the eighteen country profiles and the four transboudary river basins in the region. The interest of this new survey lies in the updating of data and in the trends during the last ten years.

\nFifteen years after the first publication \"Irrigation in Latin America and the Caribbean in figures\" (FAO, 2000), it appeared necessary to update the data and to identify the main changes in water use and irrigation that had occurred in the region. The countries forming the region were determined by the regional distribution given in FAO's Water Report 23 \"Review of world water resources by country\" (2003). In this update though, the 21 countries of the \"Central America and the Caribbean\" region have been split into two sepate groups - \"Central America\" and \"Caribbean\" - thus resulting in a total of three subregions. The countries included in each subregion are:

\n- South America: Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of);
\n- Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama;
\n- Caribbean and Bahamas: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.

In this survey Mexico is included as part of North America and therefore its data are not part of this report. However, the information on Mexico has also been updated, and its national profile can be consulted. In the previous survey, 32 countries were also considered, but the list of countries does not coincide with the current list. The Bahamas was not included in the previous version of the survey while is part of this version.
\nThis general perspective of the region presents outstanding characteristics that arise from the new data collected at national level for issues addressed in the thirty-two country profiles and in the cross-border basin profile made for the Amazon Basin.

\nTen years after the first publication Irrigation in Asia in figures (FAO, 1999) which presented the results of the AQUASTAT survey performed in 21 countries in Asia, it appeared necessary to update the data and to identify the main changes in water use and irrigation that had occurred in the Southern and Eastern Asia. The countries forming the region were determined by the regional distribution given in FAO's Water Report 23 \"Review of world water resources by country\" (2003).
\nThe 22 Southern and Eastern Asia countries have been grouped into four subregions, based on geographical and climatic homogeneity, which has a direct influence on irrigation. These subregions and the countries they include are:

\n- East Asia: China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Republic of Korea.
\n- South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.
\n- Mainland Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam.
\n- Maritime Southeast Asia: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Timor-Leste.

The previous survey (FAO, 1999) distinguished five subregions, including the Far East and Eastern Asia. The Far East was composed of two countries: Japan and the Republic of Korea. The present survey does not include Japan and the Republic of Korea has been included in East Asia, which thus replaces the Far East and Eastern Asia subregions of the previous survey. South Asia is the same as the Indian Subcontinent in the previous survey, but with the addition of Pakistan, which in the previous survey was included in the Near East region (FAO, 1997a). Mainland Southeast Asia is exactly the same as the Southeast subregion in the previous survey. Maritime Southeast Asia is the same as the Islands subregion in the previous survey, but now includes Timor-Leste, which at the time of the preparation of the previous survey was not yet an independent country.

\nThe 53 African countries have been grouped into seven regions based on geographical and climatic homogeneity, which has a direct influence on irrigation. These regions and the countries they include are:
\n\n\n\n
\n- Northern: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia;
\n- Sudano-Sahelian: Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan;
\n- Gulf of Guinea: Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo;
\n- Central: Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe;
\n- Eastern: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania;
\n- Southern: Botswana, Eswantini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe;
\n- Indian Ocean Islands: Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles.

They are identical to the regions in the previous report Irrigation in Africa in figures (FAO, 1995), which allows comparison with the earlier data. This general summary presents distinguishing features arising from the new data collected on a national scale for issues addressed in the country profiles. The interest of this new survey lies both in the updating of data and in the trends in the last ten years.
\nThe country profiles are either in English or in French, depending on the official FAO language of the country.
