The development of AquaGRIS, an information system on aquatic diversity for food and agriculture

One of the major priorities identified in The State of the World's Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture  was to "establish and strengthen national and global characterization, monitoring and information system for aquatic genetic resources". This priority includes:

  • Promotion of a globally standardized use of terminology, nomenclature and descriptions of aquatic genetic resources for food and agriculture;
  • Improved and harmonized reporting procedures and expanded existing species-based information systems to cover unreported AqGR; and
  • Development, promotion and institutionalization of national, regional and global standardized information systems for the collection, validation, monitoring and reporting on AqGR below the level of species (i.e. farmed types and stocks).

In response to calls from the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and the COFI Sub-Committee on Aquaculture, the Government of Germany is supporting an FAO project on the development of a global information system on farmed types of AqGR known as AquaGRIS. A prototype of AquaGRIS was released in March 2022. The prototype has a Registry database which collates data from several sources including a purpose designed questionnaire, and makes summaries of this data available through a user interface. This user interface enables generation of a number of reports. A second phase of this project commenced in October 2021 to develop the prototype into a fully operational information system which will include the capacity to generate various indicators of the status of AqGR.
