The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads the celebration in collaboration with other organizations and entities of the United Nations system.
IYAFA 2022 is an opportunity to highlight the importance of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture for our food systems, livelihoods, culture and the environment. Small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers hold enormous potential to promote transformative changes in how, by whom and for whom fish and fishery products are produced, processed and distributed – with positive ripple effects felt throughout the global food system.
IYAFA 2022 aims to raise awareness on the role of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, strengthen science-policy interaction, empower stakeholders to take action, and to build new and strengthen existing partnerships.
In this contest, the Municipality of Rome, the Centro Agroalimentare di Roma (CAR), which manages the largest fish market at national level, and the Order of Agronomists and Forestry Doctors of Rome and its Province with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) on the occasion of the closing of the 35th FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), the global intergovernmental forum where FAO members meet to examine and consider fisheries and aquaculture issues and challenges, will jointly celebrate the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022) in Rome focusing attention on the Mediterranean area.
Rome is a city very rich inwater thanks to its coastline of over 18 km, and its two rivers, the Tiber and the Aniene. The sea and waterways of Rome are an environmental and cultural heritage that must be protected for the good of the ecosystem and biodiversity of the city, but also for the supreme quality of human life. Many people's livelihoods depend on these factors.
