Ensuring Food Safety in Asia and the Pacific: It’s time to Regulate. Delegate. Participate.

Food safety is always on our minds. Part of the reason is because across Asia and the Pacific, news and media reports about food safety are frequently in the headlines. Reports of food contamination and foodborne diseases regularly cause alarm among the public and impact local businesses. This has a knock-on effect, with wider negative economic consequences for trade and tourism. This year, with the spread of COVID-19 supply chains and international trade have been disrupted. The pandemic has emphasized the critical need for pre-requisite food safety programmes such as those offering good hygiene practices for food handling which are at the core of the response to COVID-19. Indeed the pandemic has underlined the need for a concerted region-wide effort to promote food safety standards and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures as well as the need for greater investments in new technologies and digitalization.

In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is convening a Regional Food Safety Conference creating a forum for in-depth discussions on food control systems in the region and existing and emerging food safety issues. The Conference will analyze the role that science and technology could play for the provision of safe and nutritious diets. The dialogue will cover traditional topics such as food safety standards as well as new and emerging subjects such as fake or misleading news relating to food safety in relation to COVID-19.

With the slogan “Regulate. Delegate. Participate”, the Conference aims to accelerate the promotion of food safety as a culture that benefits both businesses and consumers.
