Small-scale fisheries and aquaculture contribute significantly to food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and trade. The COVID-19 pandemic affected all actors in the small-scale fisheries and aquaculture value chains.

The FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and INFOFISH conducted a study on how small-scale fisheries and aquaculture businesses fared during the COVID-19 pandemic in eight countries in Asia, namely, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The study focused on the income and livelihood status of small-scale fisherfolks and fish farmers during pre- and COVID-19 pandemic period, interventions, policies, and measures taken by the competent authorities, and best practices implemented by the communities. It also looked into the innovative coping mechanisms adopted by the small-scale holders to deal with the new normal.
