FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific

Workshop on Forests and Disasters in Southeast Asia

24/08/2016-25/08/2016 Antipolo, Philippines

Objectives

The goal of this workshop is to promote the importance of sustainable forest management to a wide range of stakeholders through supporting them to participate in, update existing and develop new international (including regional) mechanisms and instruments under the auspices of FAO. At the same time, it also contributes to FAO’s Strategic Objective S05: Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises through raising awareness and building capacities related to the use of trees and forests in mitigating the impacts of natural disasters in Southeast Asian countries. Specifically, the workshop aims to:

  • To share experiences in relation to the use of trees and forests to mitigate the impacts and reduce risks associated with hydrometeorological hazards (e.g. tropical cyclones, flash floods, landslides, droughts) in Southeast Asian countries;

  • To increase technical and coordination capacities in mapping risk areas, designing tree and forest protection systems and preparing readiness and response plans as part of broader land-use planning;

  • To obtain country inputs and recommendations into the design of an Asia-Pacific Regional Strategy on Forests and Natural Disasters.
