A season of change - Cambodia

A Season of Change is a mini-film documentary elaborating the FAO EU Food Facility Project activities in Cambodia including complementary feeding practices, high-yield-rice production, home vegetable gardening by linking with technical training to each activity. The film also illustrates the project support in irrigation scheme to ensure that Cambodian farmers could access to water and that they can cultivate at least twice a year. The FAO European Union Food Facility Project entitled "Improve the food security of farming families affected by volatile food prices" funded by European Union aims at reducing the effects of volatile food prices through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The project focuses on sustainable increase in productivity, improved access to agricultural inputs and services, diversification in production and consumption, improved feeding family feeding practices and resource management.

Fishing for future - Cambodia

Fishing for the Future is a short film documentary elaborating one of components of the FAO European Union (EU) Food Facility Project activities in Cambodia. The film captures own-family-fish-pond culture which the project has been supported through provision of fingerlings, prawn larvae, lime and training to Cambodian farmers. The film also features community fish refuge ponds which the project supports through rehabilitation and committee set up and training. Nepal, with a population of 29 million people, is the poorest country in South Asia and ranks as the twelfth poorest country in the world. Malnutrition levels are alarming and the majority of the citizens have to depend on agriculture for their survival. In response to the poverty, the global food price crisis and the lack of agricultural investment, the European Union established the European Union Food Facility programme (EUFF). Under this programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has overall objectives to prevent immediate hunger, boost agriculture and improve food security. In Nepal, around 106000 extremely vulnerable households are supported in ten districts.

Keith Sumption , FAO FMD Expert and Secretary, European Commission for Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease speaks to Gavin Wall, FAO, India Representative about the long-term challenges in eradicating Foot-and-Mouth disease. He tells us how FMD was successfully controlled in Europe over the last 50 years. Dr Sumption explains why FMD has been so difficult to eradicate, compared to for instance Rinderpest, and the specific difficulties faced by poorer countries with regard to vaccination programmes and long-term planning. In South Asia, he stresses the need for a large programme to tackle the impact of FMD given the scale and number of livestock in the region.
