Introduction This project aims to support the development and the implementation of the FAO Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity Across Agricultural Sectors and its associated Action Plans, and to engage the agricultural sectors in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

Activities

Core activities include:

The adoption of the FAO Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agriculture Sectors at the 163rd session of the FAO Council in 2019. The strategy aims to reduce the negative impacts of agriculture on biodiversity and promote sustainable agricultural practices and the conservation, enhancement, preservation, and restoration of biodiversity as a whole. 

 

The adoption and delivery of the Action Plans for the implementation of the FAO strategy, including:  

The Action Plan 2021-2023, approved at the 166th session of the FAO Council in 2021 in view of preparations for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.  

The Action Plan 2024–2027, adopted in 2024, and aligned with the KMGBF, which was adopted at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) in December 2022.  

 

The Agri-NBSAPs Support Initiative, launched by FAO at the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) in 2024. The initiative aims to accelerate the integration of biodiversity into agrifood systems by supporting countries in the implementation of NBPSAPs, to deliver the national and global biodiversity targets under the KMGBF. 

 

The development of the FAO Biodiversity Knowledge Hub, which consolidates and facilitates access to FAO’s existing information and resources related to biodiversity in agrifood systems. 

 

Regional consultations on the development of the FAO Strategy on biodiversity mainstreaming across agrifood sectors, co-organized by FAO and the CBD, including in Asia and the PacificAfricaNear East and North Africa and Europe and Central Asia

The Regional Dialogue addressed the potential for collaborative actions among the different sectors and across countries, and the role of the FAO REU guidance. Moreover, it engaged stakeholders in consultations on the regional Action Plan for the Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors in Eastern European and Central Asian countries.
