The items focus on conferences, workshops, training courses and other events organised by FAO, other UN agencies/bodies and the 15 CGIAR research centres. The events cover all food and agricultural sectors (crops, forestry, fisheries/aquaculture, livestock, agro-industry) and a wide range of biotechnologies (e.g. use of molecular markers, artificial insemination, triploidisation, biofertilisers, micropropagation, genomics, genetic modification etc.). The news and event items on this website are also disseminated through an e-mail newsletter called FAO-BiotechNews that is published in six different versions, one per language i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Events

An international course, in Spanish, that takes place at the Universidade Central de Venezuela and is sponsored, among others, by FAO. It includes both theoretical and practical exercises, including e.g. laboratory applications of biochemical and molecular markers, and its objective is to strengthen plant breeding in Latin America and the Caribbean by training young researchers in strategies to use plant germplasm, with an emphasis in pre-breeding. There are places for 25 national and 25 international participants.

A training workshop, organised by the World Agroforestry Centre, whose overall purpose is to more effectively apply molecular marker methods for the use and protection of trees in the tropics, with an emphasis on agroforestry systems, and for the benefit of smallholder farmers, rural communities and their environments. The course is structured in four modules - introduction: molecular markers in context; matching molecular markers methods with management issues; collection and analysis of molecular marker data; and application of molecular marker data for practical management. Participants will be fully sponsored and a maximum of 24 participants, from Africa, will be accepted. Deadline is 30 June.

Convened, among others, by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the symposium brings together leading researchers from various disciplines to review current knowledge on hybrid rice development, seed production, molecular application and economics, and to discuss future research strategies. Topics to be covered include improvements in breeding methodologies and products; and application of biotechnology in hybrid rice breeding.

A regional workshop organised by the Government of the Czech Republic with the support of FAO`s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia. The workshop participants will be senior officials in countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia responsible for GM crop risk assessment and management. The workshop language is English. A small number of additional places are available for participants involved in GM crop risk assessment and management from the European and Central Asian region.

Organised, among others, by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the conference`s objective is to further evaluate the potential of sorghum as a biofuel feedstock, identify needed scientific advances and propose strategies to address them. Discussion topics include current applications and research in: crop genetic and agronomic issues, including available varieties, genomics, breeding and transgenics to enhance biofuel and bioproduct application.

Organised by the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, this will be the 8th in its symposium series dedicated to harnessing and disseminating information on current trends in induced mutagenesis in higher plants. The first and last symposia were held in 1969 and 1995 respectively. Topics to be addressed in the symposium include `Induced mutations in crop breeding programs: integration with molecular, bio- and other relevant technologies` and `Mutation induction, targeted selection and mutated genes in functional genomics`.

The aims of GCP-I include "provision of a forum for cassava stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences relating to R&D in the areas of socio-economics, biodiversity and genetic resources, postharvest, starch modification, nutrition, genomics, molecular genetic markers and gene discovery, tissue culture and transformation, biotic and abiotic stresses, participatory research, and technology transfer". The Global Cassava Partnership was formed unanimously in 2003, by 45 institutions from all over the world, under the umbrella of the Global Cassava Development Strategy of IFAD/FAO.

Organised by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), with support from India`s Department of Biotechnology (DBT), this training course provides participants with a hands-on opportunity to gain expertise in the use of molecular markers in diversity analysis, gene/QTL mapping and marker-assisted breeding. It focuses on the experimental design and data analysis components of molecular markers. The expenses of selected participants from India are covered by DBT and the course is also open to a few participants outside of India, who have to cover their own expenses. Deadline is 31 December 2007.

Taking place as part of a network of regional centres providing comprehensive training in biosafety established by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, this distance learning course lasts for one year and two on-campus periods are foreseen at the Institute of Plant Biotechnology for Developing Countries, University of Ghent, at the beginning and end of the course. It begins end 2007 (exact date to be fixed) and deadline for registration is 1 July. A maximum of 25 students will be accepted. Five scholarships are available, where preference is given to applicants from Africa.

This 6th Latin American and Caribbean Meeting on Agricultural Biotechnology is organised by the Foundation for Agrarian Innovation, REDBIO and FAO. The main topics of the meeting include genomics, abiotic/biotic stress, plant breeding, bio-business, gene flow, bioethics and intellectual property. REDBIO is the Technical Co-operation Network on Plant Biotechnology in Latin America and the Caribbean, based at the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago, Chile.
