The 2014 International Year of Family Farming: Legacy and Way Forward

About the event: The 2014 International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) was successfully carried out through a worldwide mobilization of UN agencies, Governments, Family Farmers’ organizations, Civil Society, Private Sector, academia, research institutions and other actors who joined efforts to raise the profile of family farming and called for the development of an enabling policy environment for the more than five hundred million family farms in the world. There is strong consensus to keep the momentum of the IYFF and follow-up on its legacy to ensure that the political commitment raised will result in policies that capture the outcomes of the multi stakeholders’ policy dialogues. . The IYFF’s strongest legacy is the set of national and regional policies, programs and activities, and institutional arrangements to continue supporting enabling policy environments for family farming.

Purpose: The panel will share their insights on the results of the IYFF and on what is being done to continue its momentum beyond the Year based on the Legacy Document of the IYFF. This event will provide the space to discuss the follow-up on the IYFF and to highlight ongoing initiatives. In addition, key messages of the 2014 State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA), Innovation in family farming will be shared, highlighting the important role of family farms and innovation in ensuring global food security, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability.
