Global challenges require local solutions: Chief Scientist meets with top Belgian universities and think tanks

During FAO Chief Scientist Ismahane Elouafi’s recent mission to Brussels, the FAO Liaison Office in Brussels organized a scientific roundtable discussion together with the prestigious Egmont Institute. Titled “The Role of Science in achieving global food security”, the event focused specifically on the newly-approved FAO Strategy on Science and Innovation and on the contributions of Belgian institutions to international efforts of safeguarding global food security.

The vivid exchange brought together representatives from a variety of sectors, ranging from national and regional authorities in Belgium to university professors, researchers, scientists, representatives from the private sector, civil society and the European Union institutions.

During the discussion, the FAO Chief Scientist briefed participants on several key dimensions of FAO’s work and reminded them that “many challenges are global but many solutions are local”, she added that “supporting innovation and scalability at the local level is crucial to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and ensure nutritious food for all.”
