During her three-day mission to the Belgian capital, FAO Chief Scientist Ismahane Elouafi met Heads of the United Nations agencies in Brussels to discuss the new FAO Science and Innovation Strategy, which will frame and support FAO’s Strategic Framework for the coming years.

Elouafi was accompanied by FAO’s Director of the Office of Strategy, Planning and Resources Management Beth Crawford, who presented FAO's Strategic Framework, and the logical connection to the newly adopted Strategy.

The meeting was chaired by Camilla Brückner, Director of the United Nations Office, Brussels and the Director of FAO's Liaison Office in Brussels, Raschad Al-Khafaji. Also participating was United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, Gerda Verburg.

“Science and innovation are a powerful engine to transform agrifood systems and end hunger and malnutrition,” FAO Chief Scientist Elouafi told the gathering. “FAO aims to improve Members’ capabilities to harness science and innovation to realize context-specific and systemic solutions for more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

Elouafi made special mention of the role of women in science and, together with Director Beth Crawford, she explained how FAO plans to support Member Countries on their path to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
