InfoPoint conference: Food Outlook - Global Food Markets

13/01/2023

The biannual FAO publication Food Outlook was presented at a recent DG INTPA Infopoint organized by the FAO Liaison Office in Brussels and hosted by the European Commission Directorate-General for International partnerships (DG INTPA). Each edition of the Food Outlook report provides market assessments and short-term forecasts on a commodity-by-commodity basis and examines a number of market indicators. The document also features a number of articles on topical issues.

The Infopoint event began with welcoming remarks by Raschad Al-Khafaji, Director of the FAO Liaison Office in Brussels, who alluded to the long-standing important role the report plays as a global market analysis tool. His intervention was followed by a technical presentation by Máximo Torero Cullen, FAO Chief Economist who presented the data of the report as well as key drivers of the global food markets.

In his intervention, Leonard Mizzi, DG INTPA Head of Unit for sustainable agri-food systems and fisheries emphasized the necessity for the European Union to engage with partner countries in order to address short and long term challenges in policy dialogues.

Speakers underscored the new record high in global food import bills, its negative repercussions on food security and the likeliness that this will continue into 2023. Solutions to better integrate agrifood system transformation into policy dialogues were also discussed during the event.
