European Parliament

The European Parliament is the directly elected legislative body of the European Union. It is composed of 705 Members from the 27 Member States.
FAO views the role of Parliamentarians as strategic in approving the right policies, setting up legal and institutional frameworks and in allocating appropriate resources. Therefore, FAO works with Parliamentarians from different nationalities, political groups and committees.
Primarily, the work of FAO Brussels focuses on the European Parliament Committees on:
The European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition
Constituted in April 2016, the European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition brings together more than 25 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from different nationalities, political groups and parliamentary committees.
Through the Alliance, MEPs are actively contributing to consolidate the political commitment to fight against hunger and malnutrition at the EU level. The Alliance provides a platform for policy dialogue and awareness raising on the right to adequate food for all, on the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition and on making agriculture more sustainable and resilient.
Membership is open to all Members dedicated to achieving Zero Hunger and working on the issues mentioned below.
Areas of work
After its first constituent meeting during the new legislature, which took place in December 2019, Members of the Alliance decided on 5 thematic clusters on which to focus the work of the alliance.
- The EU Green Deal: Climate change and natural resource management
- Sustainable value chains and responsible investment
- Nutrition for all and food systems transformation: making sure that our food systems are healthy and sustainable
- The peace-humanitarian development nexus
- Addressing rural extreme poverty and inequality
Recent Initiatives
Recent initiatives carried out under the auspices of the Alliance – together with FAO and other partners –include a set of Brussels-based policy debates aimed at promoting constructive, multi-stakeholder and action-oriented dialogue on relevant topics related to food and nutrition security, including:
